The Sermon on the Mount

Jesus took His followers up a mountain, and taught them what it means to live for Him, What people who Belong to His Kingdom are like.

We are going to learn what it means to live for Jesus today, how we should be different as His followers, and have an expedition of our own!

Week 1 – Pack Your Bag

Matthew 5:1-3

What do we take to Jesus, what can we bring to live for Him?

My long prayers? my big fat Bible? My good deeds, is that what I need to follow Jesus?

Jesus told us that, “blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”

the poor, those without anything, are accepted and approved by God and part of His Kingdom

What I need to follow Jesus and live for Him is to understand that I bring nothing, an empty bag, and trust Jesus for everything.

Jesus Saves His Enemy

Bible Base – Acts 9:1-22

Imagine this guy as your ballet teacher

He’d be terrible!!

Or this guy running a nursery

what about this person as a cage fighter!

They would all be terrible at those jobs.

Amazingly God uses somebody you would think would be terrible, the last person you would chose, to be His messenger, his witness for Jesus.

Saul was a guy who hated Christians, He would have even thrown Alison in jail, he beat people up, had them put in prison, even killed for believing in Jesus.

He set out to Damascus, breathing murderous threats, but on his way.

A light from heaven flashed around Him, and Jesus spoke to Him.

“Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me”

Saul was totally changed that day, he saw who Jesus was, it changed Him forever.  He became one of the best missionaries for Jesus the world has ever seen.

Jesus saves His enemies, we are all enemies of God, without the light of the gospel shining into our lives we would stay that way.  But God takes murderers and makes them missionaries, God takes enemies and makes them friends because of Jesus.

Jesus does not save Himself

Mark 15:21-41

Jesus does not save Himself, but gives Himself to save us.

As He dies in the place of sinners we see 3 big things happening that help us understand what Jesus’ death does for us.

First, suddenly it goes dark in the middle of the day!  The sun was blocked out, it was totally dark For 3 hours.

This was God showing us what was happening to Jesus on the cross, all the punishment of our sin poured out on Jesus, as Jesus was cut off from God in the darkness of sin, he shouted out how it felt.

“My God, My God, why have you left me.”

Second, a curtain in the temple is ripped from top to bottom

This is God showing us what Jesus has made possible by his death.

in the temple, the place where God’s people had met with Him, there was a special place where God came to meet with His people called the Holy of Holies.

Because God is so good and perfect, so just and holy, He can’t let sin be in His presence.  This curtain was there to show that sinful people like us can’t be friends with Him.

So when the curtain ripped..

The way to God was open, Jesus had taken away our sin so we could be with God, nothing stands in the way.

Third thing, what the soldier said.

He saw it all happen, He saw how Jesus died, He said.

“Surely this man was the son of God”

a tough soldier, in charge of an execution squad, he’s seen people die on crosses before. He knew this was different.  He put His trust in Jesus, the son of God to save Him.

Jesus can save us, because He did not save Himself.

Jesus Saves A Sinner

Bible Base – Luke 23: 32-43

Jesus, who only ever did good, kind and brilliant things, has been thrown in prison.

worse than that, the religious leaders and the officials in charge if the city have decided he should be out to death on a cross, the worst punishment. Why?  Because He said he is the son of God., but that’s true!!  Jesus has done nothing wrong.

either side of Jesus were 2 guilty Criminals, only the worst of criminals were put on a cross

The guys either side of Jesus were guilty, their hearts were in a mess.

one shouted at Jesus, “come on, if you’re a saviour, save yourself, and us!”

the other man said “don’t you fear God, he’s done nothing wrong, we are getting what we deserve, Jesus remember me when you go to your kingdom”

Jesus said something amazing to him, “today you will be with me in heaven”

Jesus did not save Himself on the cross, but gave his life to save sinners, he did the most amazing swap

Jesus offers his perfection in exchange for our sin.

What a saviour!

remember the guys in church swapping shirts?

At the end of a football game, players often swap shirts, and there’s sometimes a queue for the best players shirt!  you would want the best players shirt, because it’s a bit like having their reputation.  Jesus gives us his reputation, his perfect record in exchange for our sin.

We’ve seen over the last few weeks how Jesus saves all kinds of people, girls, a young man, a woman, a man, they all shared the same problem we all share, a heart in a mess, a life stained by sin.  They all need Jesus.

Jesus saved a sinner on the cross, he can do the same for me.

Jesus Saves a Man

Bible Base – John 11:1-44

It’s always better to be with Jesus.

Jesus had some great friends, some of the people he really loved was a family, 2 sisters, Mary and Martha, and their brother Lazarus.

As you can see, Lazarus was not feeling too great, in fact he got so sick, his sisters were really worried, they sent for Jesus;

But Jesus didn’t come, he waited………

and waited…….

and waited…….

not because he didn’t love Lazarus, but because He wanted everyone to understand who He was, and what He had come to do.

Lazarus died, his family cried and cried, they wrapped his body in strips of cloth

It wasn’t good

They put his body into a tomb, this is like a cave used as a grave, and put a rock in front as a door

Then Jesus came

He saw the sadness death causes, he saw his hurting friends, and he cried with them.  Death was not part of God’s good plan.  Death happens because our world is spoiled by sin, our bodies grow old and wear out, or sickness and disaster come;  But Jesus is the saviour God sent to sort it out.

So Jesus spoke powerful life giving words,

“Lazarus, come out!”

and he did!

Jesus raised Lazarus to show he can beat sin and death.

Only God can do that!

Jesus raises his friend to be with him, there in Bethany with Jesus was the best place for Lazarus to be.

It’s always best to be with Jesus, he raises his friends who die to be with him where he is now, not in Bethany in Israel, but in heaven.

Jesus Saves, He saves girls, boys, women, men.

He saves from sin in life and is with us by his spirit to help us live as his friends.  He saves us in death so we can be with Him where He is.

It’s always best to be with Jesus!

Jesus Saves a Woman

Bible Base – Mark 5:24-34

There was a lady who had been sick for 12 long years, imagine, that’s longer than most of you have been alive!!  She had tried every doctor, she’d spent lots of money on medicines

nothing had worked.  She felt horrible all the time, she didn’t want to be around people, and people didn’t want to be around her, it must have been hard and lonely.

She heard Jesus was in town, she knew he could help her, but where Jesus went, crowds followed!  There was pushing and jostling as everyone tried to get near Jesus, she couldn’t get close.

This lady knew she didn’t even have to speak to Jesus, if she could just touch a bit of his cloak, she would be OK.  So when there was just enough of a space, she reached out and touched the edge of his cloak.

That second, she was made well…… AMAZING!!

Jesus stopped and spoke, “who touched me?”

lots of people had touched him in the busy crowd, but only this lady had reached out to Jesus in faith as the only one who could help her.  Jesus said.

“daughter, your faith has healed you, go in peace, and be free”

WOW! No-one else could do that.  Jesus saves and sets us free.

This lady knew who Jesus was, knew He was the only one who could help her.  She forgot about the crowd and went to him, believing He was all she needed.  She was saved, and more than that, this lady, used to being left out and feeling horrible, he called her daughter!  Her problem was sorted, she was saved to be in His family.

That’s what faith in Jesus does for us, sorts out our horrible big sin problem, and makes us part of Jesus’ family.

Faith is hands on!  Hands in, hands getting messy…

Great Work

Just touching his cloak was enough..

Some top fashion designers amongst us designed some cloaks with hand prints to remind us of the woman’s faith

and the little ones did some finger painting on their cloaks.

lets forget the crowd, remember who Jesus is, and reach out to him in faith to save us and help us.

Jesus Saves A Boy

Bible Base – John 4:46-54

Another important man comes to Jesus for help, this time he is a Royal Official!  Lots of connections with lots of important people, probably lots of money, but when his son’s life hangs in the balance the only person he can come to for help is Jesus.

A frightened Dad comes to Jesus and says “please come and help my sick boy”

The boy is a good half days journey away in Capernaum, Jesus is in Cana, what will he do?  Send Calpol?  Send a first aid kit, will he rush straight there to hold his hand and make him better?

You know what He did,  he just said, “go home, your boy is better”.

This Dad took Jesus “at his word” and went away, when he got home the next day, what did he find?  His son healthy and happy?  What time did it happen?  The moment Jesus spoke…….

Just the words of Jesus were enough to bring life to a boy miles away!! WOW!!

When we tell people what to do, sometimes they listen, sometimes they don’t, what happens when Jesus speaks?

Is it easier to help people when you are with them or far away?

Remember “passing” the egg, it was easier when we were close….

But when we we’re far away, much harder….

ok, so the eggs were hard boiled, but you got the idea!!  Jesus only had to use his words to bring life, because He is the life bringing Son of God, He is God’s word in action on earth.

If His words are that cool, we should read them!!

Lets check we’ve got it, put the cartoon strip of events in the right order…

When we take Jesus at His word, we believe who he is and that He has power to save us, it changes everything.  The Dad and everyone in the house believed in Jesus that day.

Jesus saves!

Jesus Saves a Little Girl

Bible Base – Luke 8:40-56

We’ve been learning that God is a saving God, throughout all of the Bible we have seen God save His people from all kinds of trouble.  Now we see that God’s son Jesus saves too!

Who will Jesus save, someone important, someone famous?  No this week we learned that Jesus saved a little girl!  A little girl who was really sick.

Her Dad was an important leader in the church, he knew lots of important people, but when his little girl was so sick, the only one who could help was Jesus, he knelt down in front of him and pleaded with him to help.

Jesus went to help, but before they got to the house messengers arrived to say, “it’s too late she is dead”

Jesus told the Dad, “don’t be afraid, just believe”

Jesus was teaching us something about what He can save us from, “this little girl has not died, she is sleeping”

You see for everyone who believes in Jesus, when we die, it is only like sleeping until Jesus wakes us up to be with him.  So when Jesus went to the little girls body, and held her hand and said, “little girl, get up” she did!

And she wasn’t just a tiny bit better, so she could lie on the sofa and have dry toast, she was totally better, she could eat and run around.  WOW!

Jesus saves, from the power of death to make it just like sleep until he wakes us to be with a Him.  He tells us not to be afraid, but to believe.

You are never too old an important that you don’t need Jesus, you are never too young and “insignificant”, the little girl, we don’t even get to know her name, but Jesus saved her.  Jesus saves children, you’re never too young to need Him.

Jesus saves!  Great news, worth sharing, with everyone!

God sent Jesus the Saviour

Bible Base – Matthew 1, Luke 1-2

Come gather round and listen from everywhere and every land,

Here’s a great Christmas Message we want you all to understand

Throughout all of history God’s had the greatest plan,

To save, to help, to rescue and offer hope to every man

God promised to send a saviour, that He would be God’s King

A rescuer for all mankind, who peace with God would bring

To remind us of God’s saving work we made a rescue tree

Filled with Daniel’s lion’s, Noah’s ark, and Jonah’s fish from the sea.

Then God sent Jesus, into our world to save

Our God offers the greatest gift to anyone today

Jesus, who came to our darkness, into our world of sin

God Saved Jonah from the Sea

Bible Base – Jonah 1-4

It’s not every week you come to church in your dressing gown, and find there’s a boat at the front!

…. But then it’s not every week, we learn about Jonah!

Jonah, the prophet, God’s message deliverer.

Happy to deliver God’s message to God’s people, to people who looked like him, and thought like him.  So when God told Jonah to go to Nineveh, Jonah said..

“EURGH! No way!  Those people are scum,

they don’t deserve to hear about what God has done!”

So Jonah legs it off the other way

finds a group of sailors setting off that very day!

So Jonah climbs on board and settles down for forty winks,

God sends a storm that rocks them, the boat will surely sink!

The frightened sailors call out to any god they know

“Hey Jonah, we’re gonna drown out here, so give your God a go”

“The one true God who rules all things sent this storm because of me

To tell you, and remind me that he rules the land and sea.

if you lot all want to live, there’s 1 thing you must do

chuck me over in the sea, you’ll see what I’ve said is true.”

Into the sea Jonah’s thrown with an almighty splash!

the storm is still and silent now, but Jonah’s sinking fast

Down deep in the darkest depths, God sends a rescue fish

It swallows Jonah whole and carries out God’s every wish

Down in the deep dark sea Jonah realises “I’m scum”

“I need God’s good kind rescue too, to hear of all He’s done.”

From the fish God hears him, and saves him from his death

the fish sicks Jonah onto the land, imagine smelling of fish breath!

Jonah now goes off to Nineveh, and takes a message this time.

“40 days, and then you’re dead, tomorrow will be 39!”

the people of Nineveh cry out to God, please save us we are scum

God hears and God forgives them, hearts in Nineveh are won.

How about my heart, have I realised I’m scum?

That I need God’s good kind rescue too, to hear of all He’s done

How about my heart, has God’s rescue made it change?

Or are there just some people I think God should never save.

Your Work

Who is the naughtiest kid in your class?

Imagine I gave you a mission to save them a seat every lunch time, invite them to play with your stuff, come to your party!  That would be tough! That’s like what God asked Jonah to do.

Read Jonah 1 v 15-16 – who saved the sailors?

Read Jonah 2 v 9 – who saved Jonah?

Read Jonah 3 v 10 – who saved all of Nineveh?

If God loves to save, and is gracious and compassionate, what kind of people of people should we be? How can we be God’s messengers to people around us, even those we may not like!
