Jesus Saves a Man

Bible Base – John 11:1-44

It’s always better to be with Jesus.

Jesus had some great friends, some of the people he really loved was a family, 2 sisters, Mary and Martha, and their brother Lazarus.

As you can see, Lazarus was not feeling too great, in fact he got so sick, his sisters were really worried, they sent for Jesus;

But Jesus didn’t come, he waited………

and waited…….

and waited…….

not because he didn’t love Lazarus, but because He wanted everyone to understand who He was, and what He had come to do.

Lazarus died, his family cried and cried, they wrapped his body in strips of cloth

It wasn’t good

They put his body into a tomb, this is like a cave used as a grave, and put a rock in front as a door

Then Jesus came

He saw the sadness death causes, he saw his hurting friends, and he cried with them.  Death was not part of God’s good plan.  Death happens because our world is spoiled by sin, our bodies grow old and wear out, or sickness and disaster come;  But Jesus is the saviour God sent to sort it out.

So Jesus spoke powerful life giving words,

“Lazarus, come out!”

and he did!

Jesus raised Lazarus to show he can beat sin and death.

Only God can do that!

Jesus raises his friend to be with him, there in Bethany with Jesus was the best place for Lazarus to be.

It’s always best to be with Jesus, he raises his friends who die to be with him where he is now, not in Bethany in Israel, but in heaven.

Jesus Saves, He saves girls, boys, women, men.

He saves from sin in life and is with us by his spirit to help us live as his friends.  He saves us in death so we can be with Him where He is.

It’s always best to be with Jesus!

Jesus Saves a Woman

Bible Base – Mark 5:24-34

There was a lady who had been sick for 12 long years, imagine, that’s longer than most of you have been alive!!  She had tried every doctor, she’d spent lots of money on medicines

nothing had worked.  She felt horrible all the time, she didn’t want to be around people, and people didn’t want to be around her, it must have been hard and lonely.

She heard Jesus was in town, she knew he could help her, but where Jesus went, crowds followed!  There was pushing and jostling as everyone tried to get near Jesus, she couldn’t get close.

This lady knew she didn’t even have to speak to Jesus, if she could just touch a bit of his cloak, she would be OK.  So when there was just enough of a space, she reached out and touched the edge of his cloak.

That second, she was made well…… AMAZING!!

Jesus stopped and spoke, “who touched me?”

lots of people had touched him in the busy crowd, but only this lady had reached out to Jesus in faith as the only one who could help her.  Jesus said.

“daughter, your faith has healed you, go in peace, and be free”

WOW! No-one else could do that.  Jesus saves and sets us free.

This lady knew who Jesus was, knew He was the only one who could help her.  She forgot about the crowd and went to him, believing He was all she needed.  She was saved, and more than that, this lady, used to being left out and feeling horrible, he called her daughter!  Her problem was sorted, she was saved to be in His family.

That’s what faith in Jesus does for us, sorts out our horrible big sin problem, and makes us part of Jesus’ family.

Faith is hands on!  Hands in, hands getting messy…

Great Work

Just touching his cloak was enough..

Some top fashion designers amongst us designed some cloaks with hand prints to remind us of the woman’s faith

and the little ones did some finger painting on their cloaks.

lets forget the crowd, remember who Jesus is, and reach out to him in faith to save us and help us.

Jesus Saves A Boy

Bible Base – John 4:46-54

Another important man comes to Jesus for help, this time he is a Royal Official!  Lots of connections with lots of important people, probably lots of money, but when his son’s life hangs in the balance the only person he can come to for help is Jesus.

A frightened Dad comes to Jesus and says “please come and help my sick boy”

The boy is a good half days journey away in Capernaum, Jesus is in Cana, what will he do?  Send Calpol?  Send a first aid kit, will he rush straight there to hold his hand and make him better?

You know what He did,  he just said, “go home, your boy is better”.

This Dad took Jesus “at his word” and went away, when he got home the next day, what did he find?  His son healthy and happy?  What time did it happen?  The moment Jesus spoke…….

Just the words of Jesus were enough to bring life to a boy miles away!! WOW!!

When we tell people what to do, sometimes they listen, sometimes they don’t, what happens when Jesus speaks?

Is it easier to help people when you are with them or far away?

Remember “passing” the egg, it was easier when we were close….

But when we we’re far away, much harder….

ok, so the eggs were hard boiled, but you got the idea!!  Jesus only had to use his words to bring life, because He is the life bringing Son of God, He is God’s word in action on earth.

If His words are that cool, we should read them!!

Lets check we’ve got it, put the cartoon strip of events in the right order…

When we take Jesus at His word, we believe who he is and that He has power to save us, it changes everything.  The Dad and everyone in the house believed in Jesus that day.

Jesus saves!

Jesus Saves a Little Girl

Bible Base – Luke 8:40-56

We’ve been learning that God is a saving God, throughout all of the Bible we have seen God save His people from all kinds of trouble.  Now we see that God’s son Jesus saves too!

Who will Jesus save, someone important, someone famous?  No this week we learned that Jesus saved a little girl!  A little girl who was really sick.

Her Dad was an important leader in the church, he knew lots of important people, but when his little girl was so sick, the only one who could help was Jesus, he knelt down in front of him and pleaded with him to help.

Jesus went to help, but before they got to the house messengers arrived to say, “it’s too late she is dead”

Jesus told the Dad, “don’t be afraid, just believe”

Jesus was teaching us something about what He can save us from, “this little girl has not died, she is sleeping”

You see for everyone who believes in Jesus, when we die, it is only like sleeping until Jesus wakes us up to be with him.  So when Jesus went to the little girls body, and held her hand and said, “little girl, get up” she did!

And she wasn’t just a tiny bit better, so she could lie on the sofa and have dry toast, she was totally better, she could eat and run around.  WOW!

Jesus saves, from the power of death to make it just like sleep until he wakes us to be with a Him.  He tells us not to be afraid, but to believe.

You are never too old an important that you don’t need Jesus, you are never too young and “insignificant”, the little girl, we don’t even get to know her name, but Jesus saved her.  Jesus saves children, you’re never too young to need Him.

Jesus saves!  Great news, worth sharing, with everyone!

God Saved Jonah from the Sea

Bible Base – Jonah 1-4

It’s not every week you come to church in your dressing gown, and find there’s a boat at the front!

…. But then it’s not every week, we learn about Jonah!

Jonah, the prophet, God’s message deliverer.

Happy to deliver God’s message to God’s people, to people who looked like him, and thought like him.  So when God told Jonah to go to Nineveh, Jonah said..

“EURGH! No way!  Those people are scum,

they don’t deserve to hear about what God has done!”

So Jonah legs it off the other way

finds a group of sailors setting off that very day!

So Jonah climbs on board and settles down for forty winks,

God sends a storm that rocks them, the boat will surely sink!

The frightened sailors call out to any god they know

“Hey Jonah, we’re gonna drown out here, so give your God a go”

“The one true God who rules all things sent this storm because of me

To tell you, and remind me that he rules the land and sea.

if you lot all want to live, there’s 1 thing you must do

chuck me over in the sea, you’ll see what I’ve said is true.”

Into the sea Jonah’s thrown with an almighty splash!

the storm is still and silent now, but Jonah’s sinking fast

Down deep in the darkest depths, God sends a rescue fish

It swallows Jonah whole and carries out God’s every wish

Down in the deep dark sea Jonah realises “I’m scum”

“I need God’s good kind rescue too, to hear of all He’s done.”

From the fish God hears him, and saves him from his death

the fish sicks Jonah onto the land, imagine smelling of fish breath!

Jonah now goes off to Nineveh, and takes a message this time.

“40 days, and then you’re dead, tomorrow will be 39!”

the people of Nineveh cry out to God, please save us we are scum

God hears and God forgives them, hearts in Nineveh are won.

How about my heart, have I realised I’m scum?

That I need God’s good kind rescue too, to hear of all He’s done

How about my heart, has God’s rescue made it change?

Or are there just some people I think God should never save.

Your Work

Who is the naughtiest kid in your class?

Imagine I gave you a mission to save them a seat every lunch time, invite them to play with your stuff, come to your party!  That would be tough! That’s like what God asked Jonah to do.

Read Jonah 1 v 15-16 – who saved the sailors?

Read Jonah 2 v 9 – who saved Jonah?

Read Jonah 3 v 10 – who saved all of Nineveh?

If God loves to save, and is gracious and compassionate, what kind of people of people should we be? How can we be God’s messengers to people around us, even those we may not like!

God Saved Daniel From The Lions

Bible Base – Daniel 6

Daniel in the “lion’s Cage”

A new King Darius has replaced King Neb,

The name may be different, but he’s got the same big head!

Daniel works hard for Darius the King

His aim to Honour God the ruler of all things

Daniel loved to talk to God each day

He’d look back towards his home as he knelt to pray.

BUT, there were enemies in the Palace, jealous of Dan’s work

Saw his love for God, and it drove them all BIZERK!

They made a nasty plot, they made a terrible plan,

“I know a way we can trap this Godly man”

“Hey King Darius, you’re so cool

you should make an amazing rule

Pray to you alone, it’s the law

Or else you’ll hear the lion’s roar!”

So proud King D made a bad law

pray only to me or face the lion’s ROAR

The law was set as a trap for Dan

What would you do if you were this man?

Well Daniel did what He did every day

look out towards home, kneel before God and pray!

“HA HA! we’ve caught him, he’s breaking the law!

time for you to face the lion’s ROAR!”

“I’ve served you faithfully and worked hard King D

But God’s good perfect law says pray to only Me

God’s law says this, because He’s King of all kings

the maker and ruler of everything.”

King D regrets his big headed law

Now Daniel must face the lion’s that ROAR

He can’t change his words, he can’t help his friend,

King D controls nothing at all in the end.

that night he can’t sleep, he tosses about

goes back to the lion’s and gives Daniel a shout

“Daniel, please say your God has saved you

I’ve waited all night, and I’ve prayed that it’s true.”

Daniel answered, “I’m safe, and alive to this day

Thanks to the God to whom I pray.”

“He was with me to help me and save me from harm

He shut the mouths of the Lion’s and kept them all calm.”

King D was delighted, he scrapped his bad rule

and realised something totally cool

Daniel’s God is the one who saves

He alone deserves prayer and praise

He can control what a lion can do

He can control what can happen to you

He is the boss over everything

He is the greatest, the King of all Kings.

He deserves all prayer and praise

For He alone has the power to save.

Darius was a powerful King, but what couldn’t he do?

What did he control?

What didn’t he control?

What did God show He could control?

What did God do?

God is the only one who rules all things, he can tell lion’s what to do.  This powerful mighty God saves people who turn to Him, WOW!

God Saved Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego In the Firey Furnace

Bible Base – Daniel 3

2 Different king’s

2 Different Laws

king Neb with a big head

the 1 True God who’s law is good.

Who Will you Worship?

King Neb, with a big head, made a MASSIVE golden statue and set it on a plain so all could see it.  He made a sort of party game, when the music stops bow to my statue, worship me, say I’m the best, celebrate me!

The 1 True God who’s law is good, who saves His people says I am The Lord your God, I alone deserve worship, do not make an idol and bow down and worship it.

King Neb with a big head, us nothing like the 1 true  God who’s law is good.  The law King Neb made was bad, worship me, or be thrown into the Fire!

Worship me, not because I’m good and deserve it, but because I’m bad and I demand it.

Our 3 young guys are faced with a terrifyingly tough choice.  They decide to obey the 1 true God, no matter what, because He can save; but even if he doesn’t we trust Him. WOW!

They refuse to bow.

Now that’s heroic!

King Neb goes proper nuts and throws them into an even hotter blazing furnace.

Hang on a minute, only 3 went in, there’s 4 in there, and 1 looks like a son of the god’s.

God saved Rach, Shach and Benny in the fire by sending His son to save and protect them.  What an awesomely good God.  He alone deserves worship, loving, celebrating. King Neb changes His bad law to a better one (although still not good)

v 29 People of any nation or language who say anything against the God of these guys will have their house knocked down.

But he did learn what we need to… No other god can save in this way.

What things do we love, celebrate, tell everyone about?

Do we love, celebrate and tell everyone about God and all He has done?

Read Dan 3 v 16 – 18

What did they know God could do?

How did it help them?

How is God different from King Neb?

What did God do in verse 25?

With us to save us.

when we understand what God is like and what he has done, we will love and worship Him.

God saves Ruth from Starving

Bible Base – Ruth 1-4

A fabulous love story, with a handsome hero; but a really sad start.

Naomi and her family left God’s place and God’s people and went to live with God’s enemies, her boys married women from Moab YUCK!

To walk away from God ends in disaster! This family ends up in a mess.

The story starts with death and tears, Naomi’s husband dies, her boys die, she feels like she has nothing, she decides to turn back to God.

Amazingly Ruth decides to follow her, and even more amazingly, to follow her God.  Ruth the Moabitess, enemy of God, wants to be part of His family.

the women return, but with no one to care for them times are tough, their only way to get food is to pick up grain left behind in the farmers fields, only a farmer who loves God and follow his law will make sure there is food left for those in need

Times are tough, it’s hard work, who will save them?  They need a law keeping hero, so God sends one!

Brilliant, God loving law keeping Boaz!

Boaz rescues them by keeping God’s law. Boaz loves them by making them his family. By the end of the book, he’s married Ruth, given Naomi a home, and has a son, what an amazing end from a sad start!

God saved Ruth by sending a God loving law keeping hero, and changed her from being an enemy outside of  God’s people, to being family. WOW!

God does that for us by brilliant God loving law keeping Jesus.  We can be saved, and made part of God’s family because of Him.

God Saves David from Goliath

Bible Base – 1 Samuel 17

God’s King takes on God’s enemy and wipes him out!

The Anointed King

David, a shepherd boy from Bethlehem, a young man with a heart that loved God.

The Enormous Enemy

He hated God and skitted His people.

David knew that God was bigger still, and that just like God had helped Him to fight bears and lions away from his sheep, God would help him fight the Philistines away from His people.  He refused the armour of Saul, the people’s choice of King, who despite his handsome height was no help at all!

David sets off with stones from the stream.

They wouldn’t have looked like this at the time!

Goliath laughed in David’s face, laughed at his faith, laughed at His God.  Goliath got 1 stone from David’s sling in the head, he fell down! David killed Him!

God’s King beats God’s enemy.

What an amazing victory! When the people saw what David had done, they remembered how Big God was and piled in after him to join in the battle, and beat their enemies.

The enemy was massive! Check out drawn to scale “Big G”

The King and his weapon seemed small; but God’s chosen King from Bethlehem beat Goliath with a stone.  Jesus God’s forever King, a boy from Bethlehem, with a heart after God’s takes on the hugest enemy of sin, all the laughing in God’s face, all the skitting and nastiness and evil and beats it by taking it to the cross.  It seemed a strange way to win a battle, but it worked! The stone was rolled away, Jesus rose to show he had won!

God Saves – God’s King beats His Enemy

Does this mean we can throw rocks at people who skit us?

read Isaiah 53, this was written to tell us what God’s forever King would do.

How does Jesus respond to people who laugh at him?

The big problem of sin is not just about how other people treat us, it’s how any of us treat God.  People who laugh at you for following Jesus don’t know him, the only reason you are different us that God has saved you.  Perhaps they need you to tell them about our great saving God.
